Smart Cities Mission: Madurai’s Struggles

The Indian Government’s Smart Cities Mission aimed to enhance infrastructure and quality of life in cities like Madurai by promoting sustainable urban solutions and smart technologies. Despite significant investments, including heritage site restoration and improved public transport, many projects, such as the redevelopment of the Periyar bus stand, have faced delays and inefficiencies.

Challenges include incomplete infrastructure and high costs affecting their impact. The government’s role includes ensuring effective implementation and addressing setbacks in smart city projects to meet intended goals and improve urban living conditions.
