Bhutan’s Economic Transformation

The Bhutan Government’s 13th Five-Year Plan focuses on transforming the country into a high-income economy by 2034 while maintaining its Gross National Happiness philosophy. The plan prioritizes rapid economic growth, fostering new industries like digital economies and a mindfulness city, while addressing challenges such as brain drain, job creation, and infrastructure limitations. Hydropower projects, digital advancements like bitcoin mining, and the development of agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing industries are central to the plan.

The government aims to improve business regulations, infrastructure, and innovation while developing the labor force to meet contemporary industry needs. Digital initiatives, including establishing a Bhutan Carbon Market and leveraging bitcoin mining, are essential to the strategy, though concerns about financing and energy consumption persist. The government’s efforts are crucial for achieving sustainable growth and economic diversification.
