The Indian Government, through the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), has initiated a GIS/GPS-based tree census to update its data after 12 years. The project, with a budget of Rs 5 crore, will track trees based on specific size criteria to improve urban green space management.
The census, reflecting India’s commitment to environmental sustainability, leverages digital technology to enhance urban planning and preserve the city’s natural resources. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed,” highlighting the importance of such green initiatives.
