The South African government is accelerating its program to connect rural and township households to the internet, aiming to connect 1.5 million households by year-end and 5.5 million within the next three to four years. This initiative includes installing Wi-Fi hotspots, providing affordable access at rates as low as R5 per day.
The African’s government has also launched smart schools with digital skills training and established the Digital Skills Forum to empower youth and track the National Digital Skills Programmes performance. Additionally, the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) has digitized government services and aims for a National Broadband Project worth at least R6 billion to enhance connectivity infrastructure and support local innovations.
