Algeria, Italy Sign $455M Deal

Algeria and Italy have signed a €420 million ($455m) agreement to develop a 36,000-hectare agricultural project in Timimoune, Algeria. This initiative is part of the Algerian government’s strategy to expand agricultural production in its desert south, aiming to boost non-hydrocarbon exports and create 6,700 jobs. The project aligns with Italy’s “Mattei Plan,” which seeks to invest in Africa and reduce irregular migration.

The Algerian government is leveraging digital technologies to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. This follows Algeria’s $3.5 billion deal with Qatar to establish a digital-enabled cow-breeding facility for powdered milk production. These efforts underscore the role of government-led digital transformation in advancing the agricultural sector and fostering economic growth.
