China has greenlit the construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet. This ambitious project aims to produce 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—over three times the capacity of the Three Gorges Dam, currently the largest in the world.
The project aligns with China’s carbon peaking and neutrality goals, stimulating industries like engineering and creating jobs in Tibet. As hydropower projects expand upstream, tensions with India and Bangladesh could rise, emphasizing the need for dialogue on transboundary water management and ecological preservation.
