Dubai’s 3D Printed Abras

The Dubai Government is spearheading a project to modernize its traditional Abras, wooden boats used for passenger transport, by incorporating 3D printing technology. This initiative is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) broader plan to enhance marine transport services in Dubai. The new electric Abras, created using 3D printing, features a monocoque structure, and electric propulsion, and aims to significantly reduce manufacturing time and costs.

The digital role in this transformation is pivotal, as 3D printing enables the precise and efficient production of these boats, aligning with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy. This strategy seeks to cut manufacturing and maintenance expenses while maintaining the Abras’ traditional identity. The project underscores Dubai’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies into public transport, enhancing both functionality and sustainability.
