ECOWAS’s Digital Economy Framework

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is leading a pivotal initiative to develop a unified legal and regulatory framework for the digital economy in West Africa. This move, part of the Western Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP) funded by the World Bank, aims to standardize regulations, promote financial inclusion, and support a transition to a cashless economy across the region.

ECOWAS has issued a call for consulting firms to assist in creating this framework, focusing on incorporating the latest digital innovations and member states’ feedback. The initiative aligns with broader efforts across Africa to expand digital financial services, as seen with TBD’s promotion of blockchain technologies and digital wallets. As West Africa works toward a more integrated digital economy, the aim is to facilitate cross-border payments, reduce transaction costs, and enhance financial inclusion throughout the region.
