The Government of South Africa has prioritized tackling youth unemployment, which stands at 45.5%, by harnessing the digital economy. International Youth Day 2024 emphasized the role of digital technologies in driving progress, aligning with the government’s focus on this sector.
UNDP South Africa is advancing digital skills and infrastructure to bridge the divide. Initiatives include training youth in coding and digital technologies, building ICT infrastructure, and supporting innovation through challenges and hackathons. Over 1,194 young people have received training, with 719 securing jobs. Efforts like expanding public Wi-Fi and providing digital tools aim to empower youth and foster economic growth, crucial for South Africa’s development.
