SUMMARY:How is the digital transformation changing parliamentary and participatory democracy?
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Dr. Julia Schwanholz (Duisburg-Essen University). This event is part of the Digital Governance Research Colloquium hosted by the Centre for Digital Governance. \n\nIt can be observed that institutionalised forms of participation are being used less (e.g. voter turnout decreases for decades) whereas other forms of participation – one finds a shift towards unconventional ways (e.g. protest and marches) – are on the rise. \nThis observation will be brought into question in the talk. Firstly\, some reasons for this development will be discussed. Secondly\, consequences and potential problems will be shown. How can conventional participation be increased again and why is this important and for whom? How does all this relate to technical developments\, new digital tools and its risks and opportunities?
