The international community is making slow progress toward protecting 30% of the Earth by 2030, with only 17.6% of land and 8.4% of oceans currently designated as protected areas. Governments worldwide play a crucial role in expanding these areas effectively and equitably, ensuring they benefit both nature and local communities. To meet the global target, urgent efforts are needed to increase the coverage of protected regions and incorporate Indigenous territories.
Digital tools can enhance the monitoring and management of these areas, ensuring transparency and accountability in conservation efforts. Enhanced data collection and sharing are essential for assessing the effectiveness of protected zones and enabling informed decision-making, allowing governments to balance biodiversity conservation with human rights and community needs.
