Hungary Urges Schengen Membership for Romania and Bulgaria

The Hungarian government, led by its Prime Minister, emphasizes the importance of Romania and Bulgaria full accession to the Schengen Zone, particularly in regard to land borders. This push is seen as crucial for regional cooperation and the consolidation of the European Union. Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has reiterated that Romania has completed the necessary preparations and highlighted the economic and political challenges arising from Romania’s exclusion from the visa-free zone.

Digital cooperation and cross-border data-sharing initiatives are essential for the smooth integration of Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen Area, further aligning the region with broader EU digital standards. Despite Austria’s resistance, Hungary continues to press for a timely resolution, citing national interest and EU unity.
