India Leads Offshore Mining

India is set to lead in offshore mining as the government amends legislation to enhance this sector. Offshore mining involves retrieving mineral deposits from deep seabeds, with the recent amendments to the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act facilitating an auction route for awarding production leases. The government is currently developing digital rules and frameworks to ensure efficient auctioning and management of offshore mineral blocks, leveraging digital technologies for transparency and operational efficiency.

The government has identified 15 blocks explored by the Geological Survey of India, and inter-ministerial consultations are ongoing to finalize the process. By utilizing digital tools and frameworks, India aims to streamline offshore mining operations, positioning itself as a global leader in this untapped area of mineral extraction.
