Kazakhstan, the world’s largest uranium producer, is making strides in addressing its chronic energy shortages by moving forward with plans to build its first nuclear power plant (NPP). A recent visit to France by a Kazakh delegation marked a significant step in this endeavor, as they explored opportunities with French officials and industry leaders. The delegation held talks with France’s energy and trade ministries, as well as top players in the nuclear sector, including companies specializing in NPP operations, equipment design, and turbine manufacturing.
With a projected cost of $10-15 billion, the plant is expected to be built near Lake Balkhash in the Almaty region. Kazakhstan has begun formal negotiations with shortlisted candidates, including EDF, to supply the technology for the NPP, with a final decision anticipated in 2025. This development marks a significant milestone in Kazakhstan’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and ensure a sustainable energy future
