Kenya has taken a significant step towards securing online transactions by licensing four electronic certification providers (E-CSPs). The licensed providers, Geda, Emudhra, TendaWorld Limited, and the Information and Communication Technology Authority, will offer digital electronic certification to application developers and consumers. This move will make it difficult to forge documents such as contracts and cheques. It will also enable busy executives to sign paperwork from anywhere in the world.
The electronic certification licenses issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) will enable the ICT Authority to provide digital signatures for e-government services. This development is part of Kenya’s efforts to secure its cyber space and facilitate the secure transfer of information required for e-commerce and internet banking. The CA has also operationalized the National Kenya Computer Incident and Response Team Coordination Centre to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber threats.
