Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has imposed a hefty fine of €310 million ($335 million) on LinkedIn for violating the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The fine is a result of LinkedIn’s illegal processing of users’ personal data to deliver targeted advertising. This is the sixth-largest fine issued under GDPR since its introduction in 2018. The decision also orders LinkedIn to bring its data processing into compliance with GDPR.
The Irish regulator has been cracking down on Big Tech companies for GDPR violations, with Meta Platforms Inc. facing a record €1.2 billion fine in May 2023. LinkedIn has stated that it believes it has been in compliance with GDPR but will work to ensure its ad practices meet the commission’s decision.
