In the latest Updates of 2024, the Government of Ontario has taken decisive steps to bolster cybersecurity measures across the province’s public sector entities. The introduction of the Enhanced Digital Security and Trust Act (EDST Act) marks a significant milestone in safeguarding critical infrastructure and sensitive data against evolving cyber threats.
Under the EDST Act, which applies to provincial and municipal public sectors, including school boards, school authorities, children’s aid societies, colleges, universities, and hospitals, the government gains the authority to enact regulations mandating robust cybersecurity programs. These programs are to encompass essential elements such as the assignment of internal responsibility, education awareness, incident response, and program oversight.
