Pakistan aims to accelerate optical broadband deployment to promote its digital economy. The National Broadband Network Summit was recently held to bring together government and industry forces. A consensus was reached to improve optical broadband penetration rates and expand coverage. Policies and regulations were proposed to support this goal.
The summit also proposed building Islamabad into Pakistan’s first gigabit city within five years. Fiber broadband is seen as key infrastructure for the economy and society. A 10% increase in broadband penetration can lead to an average GDP growth of 1.38%. Pakistan’s fiber broadband penetration rate has increased rapidly, with FTTH users growing by over 80% year-on-year.
