The UK’s newly elected Labour government has introduced the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill to counter rising cyber threats. Unveiled during the State Opening of Parliament, the bill aims to strengthen cybersecurity across critical sectors such as transport, energy, and digital infrastructure. It mandates incident reporting for ransomware attacks and empowers UK’s government regulators to proactively monitor vulnerabilities.
The legislation extends technology regulations to encompass online marketplaces and cloud services, with twelve regulators tasked for enforcement. Experts, including former National Cyber Security Center head Ciaran Martin, applaud the bill for its comprehensive approach to bolstering cyber resilience and updating outdated laws like the UK’s Computer Misuse Act 1990.
