Eritrean Printed Heritage Digitization

It had been nearly four years since the project commenced in collaboration with the RDC to establish Eritrea’s national digital library. The primary goal was to digitalize all books and printed materials published in Eritrea from the inception of print to 1962. Visits were made to European libraries to procure copies of printed texts, which were subsequently brought back for digital preservation. The endeavor spanned from 1867, marking the advent of printing in Massawa, to the year 1962. Over 200 thousand pages across various languages had been successfully digitalized by that point.

Emphasis was placed on ensuring that the digitized materials would eventually be printed within Eritrea. The collection encompassed a wide array of publications including magazines, calendars, books, and booklets. A significant challenge lay in effectively mapping out and comprehensively digitizing these diverse productions, necessitating a thorough understanding of the published works.
