Digital Economy’s Environmental Impact

The global digital economy is expanding rapidly, with annual smartphone shipments exceeding 1.2 billion and IoT devices projected to reach 39 billion by 2029. E-commerce has surged 60% since 2016, now totaling $27 trillion. However, this growth significantly strains the environment, with the production of digital devices being highly resource-intensive and generating substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Improper disposal of digital waste, which rose 30% from 2010 to 2022, further exacerbates environmental harm.

Governments and digital sectors must address these environmental challenges by implementing sustainable practices and enhancing waste management. As developing countries play a crucial role in the global supply chain for essential minerals, their involvement is vital in mitigating the environmental impact of rapid digital transformation.
