The European Commission has initiated infringement procedures against 17 EU member states for failing to transpose the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) into national laws. This directive significantly expands sustainability reporting requirements, impacting over 50,000 companies and introducing detailed standards on environmental and social impacts. The government’s role is critical in ensuring uniform implementation across member states to facilitate consistent sustainability disclosures, enabling investors to make informed decisions based on company performance.
In addition to the CSRD, the Commission has also opened procedures against 26 member states for not implementing provisions from the Renewable Energy Directive. This directive aims to boost renewable energy to 42.5% of the EU’s energy consumption by 2030, highlighting the need for governments to adopt digital solutions that streamline processes and enhance compliance with EU sustainability targets.
