The Information Commissioner Office (ICO) fined U.S.-based Clearview £7.5 million for illegally collecting facial images for the company’s multi-billion-photo database.

The three-member tribunal of the company agreed on fine and said that the ICO was not authorized by the nation’s General Data Protection Regulation to make such a determination. It was acting beyond its jurisdiction. But the forum did not consider if Clearview’s facial recognition service itself was used illegally in the UK.
