Malaysia has taken a significant step towards becoming a high-income nation through digital transformation with the launch of the National AI Office (NAIO). The NAIO aims to streamline efforts in enhancing the country’s digital ecosystem, projected to have a substantial economic impact. The digital economy is expected to contribute 23% to Malaysia’s GDP by 2024, with an ambitious target of RM120 billion (US$27 billion) by 2030. This initiative is a response to the challenges in digital literacy.
The NAIO will collaborate with various ministries to ensure digital transformation is holistic, addressing the digital divide and promoting values such as sustainability and integrity. The development of AI in Malaysia requires participation from all sectors to create a systemic and inclusive transformation. The NAIO will play a crucial role in coordinating efforts in AI research and implementation, as well as revolutionising education for millions of children.
