Saudi’s Food Security Journey

Saudi Arabia’s agricultural strategy has evolved from rent distribution to strategic investment, spurred by climate crises and water scarcity. With over 90% of its land unsuitable for agriculture and 70% of water sourced from desalination, food security posed a daunting challenge. Government initiatives, like the Initiative for Saudi Agricultural Investment Abroad, aimed to secure food sources but faced obstacles abroad. To address domestic production, Saudi Arabia invested heavily in innovative technologies like vertical farming and AI-driven agriculture, striving for self-sufficiency and transforming into a regional food hub by 2030.

Key governmental bodies collaborate to implement Vision 2030’s agricultural plan, highlighting a shift towards digital-led sustainable food production to meet growing population needs.
