Governments and digital platforms are collaborating to create “AI cities” or “platform cities,” characterized by data-driven infrastructure, surveillance, and smart technologies. These cities, managed by platform corporations, aim to separate from traditional political systems, with governance based on private-public partnerships. Despite challenges in past smart city projects, AI cities are now focused on innovation zones, promoting data collection, and providing enhanced living environments for selected residents.
Governments play a key role in enabling the development of these cities by granting autonomy and supporting technological infrastructures. The emphasis on digital control and surveillance raises concerns about social exclusion and unequal access to resources.
